The Matthew Mitcham Flap...

Australian diver Matthew Mitcham upset Chinese diver Zhou Luxin to win gold in the 10 meter platform at the Beijing Olympics. This was a huge deal for him, as he says he wasn't even sure about medaling at all much less winning gold.

And now apparently there is some minor or not so minor uproar about NBC not mentioning the fact that he's gay. **grits teeth, rolls eyes**

NBC was reporting on his Olympic triumph, not trying to help gays build their self esteem by living vicariously through a gay male athlete. If Matthew chose to mention it, fine, but you can't compare this to them reporting on other athletes personal lives.

They wouldn't have known how ready he is to talk about his gayness in public. This is not the same as saying somebody has a fiancee, where they don't have to worry about any public backlash. It seems that luckily Matthew is fine with his sexuality. However, can you imagine the cries of "Unfair Outing!"

I think Matthew put it best when he said, "“Being gay and diving are completely separate parts of my life. I’m happy with myself the way I am.”

This guy had quit diving, came back from the depths of depression (ask me about that!), and knocked off a Goliath to win a gold medal! Let him have his moment without becoming the latest misguided cause of our "Gay Leaders!"
